"Blackbriar is my life and I give it my all."
Zora Cock is the vocalist Blackbriar, a band that has a mystical sound yet powerful. A band that promises and a voice that can fill you with emotions in just two seconds. Dark Metal Divas had the opportunity to speak with Zora, to know a little more of this melodic and emotional world to which it belongs.
DMD: Well, first at all, can you tell something about you? For example ... How do you describe to Zora Cock?
Zora: Of course I can! My name is Zora and I am the lead singer of the band Blackbriar. I’m from the Netherlands and I live in a city called ‘Assen’. I may be a little introvert when you meet me in person but when I’m singing and performing on stage I change and I truly become myself, that’s why I love singing and music so much, it’s a perfect way to express yourself. I also like to write, read books (fantasy, thrillers, novels) and watch some TV series.
DMD: How did you start in the musical world ? Have you ever recived vocal classes?
Zora: Yes, when I was 16 years old I started to go to a music and sounddesign school. That’s also where I got my first singing lessons. And after that I had some singing lessons that were more focused on a more extreme use of the voice (like screaming).
DMD: Now , tell me about Blackbriar.. How did it start this Project?
Zora: Before Blackbriar, I already worked with René (the drummer of Blackbriar) on music, but it was a different kind of genre; ‘Dark Pop’.
After we went to a concert of ‘Slash’ together, I was incredibly impressed by their support act: Halestorm. I thought ‘wow, that’s what I want!’. So me and René started to look for people who were interested in starting a band with us and that worked out very well!
DMD: At the moment to write the lyrics ... Do you participate it in that?
Zora: Yes I write all the lyrics by myself! And I really love it!
DMD: I remember the first time that I watched to Blackbriar in Youtube, the first thing that caught my attention was your beautiful red hair and also the rythm of your songs... Now tell us ... How was the experience at the moment of record those videos?
Zora: Thank you so much! I absolutely loved making those videos, especially Until Eternity because I had the opportunity to visualize the lyrics that I wrote and the meaning I had for the song. It’s like making your song complete and that’s amazing. I also loved the whole experience, If I could, I would make a music video with every song I write and I hope I can some day!
DMD: To be honest, I must to say that Until Eternity caught my attention completely, it's a song full of emotions Can you tell us more about this song ? Which was the inspiration for this song?
Zora: Until Eternity is about two people who find each other in every life they live. It’s about a love that never dies. This song means a lot to me. The book series ‘Fallen’ by Lauren Kate has been an inspiration for me.
DMD: We know that you are working to release your first EP debut Do you think to include songs like Hear your scream and witching hour?
Zora: The EP will include ‘Until Eternity’ and it will also include the original (full instrumental) version of ‘Witching Hour’. So yes we do!
DMD: In my opinion, Ready to kill has a sound like "Metalcore" than until eternity... Are you thinking about to follow a just a sound or we will have both styles?
Zora: Yes, you are right. The two songs are very different from each other but we are definitely going towards the style of Until Eternity!
DMD: Tell us something about the present of the band ... Do you feel that this year has been a good year for you ?
Zora: It has absolutely been a good year for us! Last year we released the Until Eternity music video and after that we received incredible responses from everybody, which is heart warming to hear. And of course we already passed the 1 million views mark! It’s really beyond all of our hopes and we hope that it will continue this way with our new songs!
DMD: If you could look for a moment into the future.. How do you see yourself in five more years ? How do you imagine your life in the future?
Zora: I hope Blackbriar will be touring all around the world and I would be able to meet everybody who is supporting us, that would be amazing. I also hope we’ve made a lot more awesome music videos and that we recorded a lot of albums. Blackbriar is my life and I give it my all.
DMD: I think that all people have an idol ... Do you have a musical reference, someone you see as an idol?
Zora: Yes I do, my idol is Kate Bush. I’ve seen her live show in London in 2014, it was like a dream come true! I like a lot more bands/musicians of course, for example: Halestorm, In This Moment, Lana Del Rey and Flyleaf.
DMD: And finally, this is last question, Would you like to add something?
